Doctoral Defense on Digital Signal Modulation in the Electrical Engineering Department

On Thursday, March 30, 2017, a doctoral defense for Mr. Hadi Athab Hamad was held at 9:00 AM in Dijlah Hall, Electrical Engineering Department. His dissertation, titled “Modified Soft Computing Technique for Identification of Digitally Modulated Signals,” was presented for the Doctor of Philosophy degree.

The examination committee included:

  1. Prof. Dr. Saad Talib Hassoun – Chair
  2. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hadi Tarish Zabon – Member
  3. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sinan Majid Abdul Sattar – Member
  4. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Saad Abdul Rida Akar – Member
  5. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alaa Hussein Ali – Member
  6. Prof. Dr. Sattar Badr Sidhkhan – Supervisor
  7. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ashwaq Qasim Hamid – Supervisor

The research focused on automatic recognition of digitally modulated signals, including multi-user chirp spread spectrum signals and common modulation types such as MPSK (2PSK, 4PSK, 8PSK), MQAM (16QAM to 256QAM), and MFSK (2FSK to 8FSK). Using up-chirp and down-chirp signals, the study successfully identified 21 different modulation types.

The dissertation earned Mr. Hamad a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering with a grade of Excellent.
