Higher Diploma Defense Discussion Held at the Electrical Engineering Department
On Thursday, March 9, 2017, the Electrical Engineering Department hosted the defense discussion for student Israa Hadi Jabr, who was pursuing a Higher Diploma. The session took place in the Dijla Hall, where she presented her project titled “Optimal Design of a Grounding System for a 33/11 kV Secondary Electrical Substation.”
The discussion committee included:
- Dr. Dhari Youssef Mahmoud (Chair)
- Dr. Jasim Farhoud Hussein (Member)
- Dr. Kanaan Ali Jalal (Supervisor and Member)
The project focused on designing and implementing a program to calculate the components of a grounding system for a 33/11 kV secondary substation. The study used the “Thawra B2” substation, operated by the Baghdad Sadr Electricity Distribution Directorate, as a case study. Calculations covered key elements such as grounding network resistance, cross-sectional area of grounding conductors, step and touch voltages, and grid voltage rise. The proposed design ensures worker safety during faults while maintaining effective performance of protection devices.
After deliberations, the project was approved, and Israa Hadi Jabr was awarded a “Very Good” grade.
