Master’s Thesis on Detecting Confusion Using AI

The Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Technology awarded a master’s degree to Fatima Ibrahim Yasser for her thesis titled “Detection of the Confusion Behaviour Based on Facial Expressions Using Artificial Intelligent Systems.”

The research introduced two systems to detect confusion:

  1. Facial Action Coding System (FACS): This approach extracts facial features based on muscle movements (action units). Seven units were identified as potential indicators of confusion, analyzed using logistic regression and quadratic classifiers.
  2. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN): A second system designed for image classification demonstrated high efficiency in detecting confused behavior.

The examination committee consisted of:

  • Dr. Musa Kadhim Wali (Chairperson)
  • Dr. Iyad Ibrahim Abbas (Member)
  • Dr. Firas Mohammed Ali (Member)

Dr. Bassam Hamid Abdul and Dr. Saad Mutashar Abbas (Supervisor and Member)
