Master’s Thesis on Detecting Confusion Using AI
The Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Technology awarded a master’s degree to Fatima Ibrahim Yasser for her thesis titled “Detection of the Confusion Behaviour Based on Facial Expressions Using Artificial Intelligent Systems.”
The research introduced two systems to detect confusion:
- Facial Action Coding System (FACS): This approach extracts facial features based on muscle movements (action units). Seven units were identified as potential indicators of confusion, analyzed using logistic regression and quadratic classifiers.
- Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN): A second system designed for image classification demonstrated high efficiency in detecting confused behavior.
The examination committee consisted of:
- Dr. Musa Kadhim Wali (Chairperson)
- Dr. Iyad Ibrahim Abbas (Member)
- Dr. Firas Mohammed Ali (Member)
Dr. Bassam Hamid Abdul and Dr. Saad Mutashar Abbas (Supervisor and Member)
