PhD Dissertation on Synchronization Performance for 5G Communications Systems Using SDR

The Department of Electrical Engineering granted a PhD to Aqeel Nafi Abdul Latif for his work titled “Performance Enhancement of MB-OFDM Synchronization for 5G Systems Based on SDR.”

The research proposed a synchronization system for OFDM and MB-OFDM that achieves precise timing alignment, carrier frequency offset estimation, and sampling offset adjustment. Simulations conducted in MATLAB demonstrated superior BER performance under varying conditions. The study also introduced a practical hardware design integrating FPGA boards and microcontrollers, implementing adaptive modulation and frequency hopping techniques for faster data recovery with reduced complexity.

The findings highlighted MB-OFDM’s suitability for short-range, high-data-rate applications, especially when combined with QPSK modulation. The committee included Professors Laith Ali Abdul Rahim (Chair), Ayman Dawood Salman, Ashwaq Qasim Hamid, Atheer Alaa Sabri, Jabbar Khalaf Mohammed, and Supervisor Wael Abdul Hassan Hadi.
