Scientific Symposium on the National Electricity System and Development Plans
The Department of Electrical Engineering held a scientific symposium titled “The Reality of the National Electricity System and Development Plans” on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, at the Dijla Hall within the department.
The symposium addressed various topics, including the current state of the national electricity system, challenges faced, energy management, and development plans, focusing specifically on transitioning the power transmission system to 230/69 kV.
This event is part of a collaborative plan between the University of Technology (represented by the Departments of Electrical and Communications Engineering) and the Ministry of Electricity (represented by the Operations and Control Directorate).
Prominent attendees included Eng. Yahya Awad Jabbar, Director General of the Operations and Control Directorate, along with Dr. Montather Sami Shakir, Head of the Electrical Engineering Department, and Dr. Afaneen Anwar Aboud, Head of the Communications Engineering Department. Faculty members, postgraduate students, and other specialists in the energy sector also participated.
Dr. Montather Sami Shakir inaugurated the symposium with a welcoming address, emphasizing the department’s role in providing technical expertise and engineering consultations to the Ministry of Electricity. He highlighted the importance of fostering collaboration between academia and industry to align educational outcomes with real-world applications.
The symposium included detailed presentations on the following topics:
- Development Plan for 2040 by Eng. Alaa Badai Salman and Eng. Muthanna Abdulkarim Hassan.
- Communication Systems in the Iraqi Electric Grid by Eng. Hamed Abdullah Atiyah.
- Real-Time Special Protection System Using Communication Systems by Eng. Jabbar Haidar Abbas and Eng. Fatima Waheed Abdullah.
The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session and discussions on future development plans. Recommendations included presenting these plans to the scientific and advisory committees within the department for evaluation and considering them as research projects for postgraduate students to enhance the efficiency of Iraq’s energy sector. Certificates of appreciation were distributed to the participating researchers at the end of the symposium.
