Master’s Student Earns Distinction in Electrical Engineering

On Thursday, March 9, 2017, the Electrical Engineering Department held a Master’s thesis defense for Salah Mahdi Obeid. The session, conducted in the Dijla Hall at 9:00 a.m., centered on his thesis titled “Design of Variable Beamforming Antenna for Wideband and Multiband Communication Applications.”

The defense committee comprised:

  1. Dr. Raad Sami Fayyad (Chair)
  2. Dr. Ashwaq Qassim Hamid (Member)
  3. Dr. Ali Jabbar Salim (Member)
  4. Dr. Haidar Malik Abdulhadi (Supervisor and Member)

The research presented six innovative antenna designs with variable beamforming capabilities for wideband applications. Highlights included:

  • Elliptical-shaped antennas with notch band control, operating from 2.5 to 12 GHz and achieving gains up to 4.84 dBi.
  • Pi-slot antennas offering multiband functionality with gains of 3.2 dBi.
  • Various E-shaped and elliptical antennas delivering gains up to 6.6 dBi.

The committee accepted the thesis, granting Salah Mahdi Obeid a Master’s degree with distinction.
